Please Don’t Call What Miley Cyrus Did “Twerking”
I know, I know. It’s been a whole 4 days since the 2013 MTV VMAs and this issue has been run into the ground, but Thursday night is when I have time to blog, K?
I first heard of Miley Cyrus “twerking” from a long time customer after a booty shaking cam show. He said something like “You definitely twerk better than Miley Cyrus”, and I was like what? Miley Cyrus twerking? He then said that she had some kind of video of her shaking her ass. I was unaware of what he was talking about and assumed that it was some video of her on stage I saw when she was a teenager doing something similar to ass shaking… but maybe that was Hillary Duff? She was a singer right? I don’t keep up with this shit. I think he may have been referring to her video of We Can’t Stop where she demonstrates her apparently only known booty shaking move. I wouldn’t have known ’cause I never listen to this type of shit on purpose.
Sunday I guess she tweeted or something saying that her performance was going to be even crazier than Madonna and Britney Spears kissing. I thought well that’s cool but had absolutely no intention of watching it. Several hours later a bunch of my Facebook friends, mostly women, were posting about how disgusting her performance was, etc., etc. The word “twerking” was used several times, as well as teddy bears.
I still had no intention of watching it.
The next day I finally decided to check out the performance after seeing funny memes and pics of her dancing with Robin Thicke, such as this one which is my favorite…
My immediate thought was this was not crazier than the kiss, then she is not twerking, and this was not a “twerk show”. The bitch has one move.
I’m pretty butt hurt (excuse the pun) by all of the attention the performance is getting for her “twerking”. I by no means claim to be the best booty shaker out there, but I’ve worked hard to learn the moves that I’ve learned and make them look “presentable”, if you will.

She’s trying to twerk, but don’t know how to twerk. It’s become offensive to a lot of people who’ve been twerking and shaking their asses for years, especially in the black culture. But it’s also helpful because it’s putting twerking on the map around the world.
It’s nice that more people are learning what twerking is that didn’t know before, but they’re going to get the wrong idea if they think that what Miley was doing on stage is actually twerking.
…we have a dance in bounce music called “exercising” where you just open your legs and shake your butt a little bit from side to side. It was that part she did in front of Robin Thicke, but she still didn’t even get that right because she didn’t have any butt control. She needs more practice.
Practice, bitch. I’m not saying that if later down the road Miley demonstrated some awesome booty shaking moves I’d be mad at her. But in the mean time, if she’s trying to make twerking her “thing”, she needs to look like she’s actually giving it the old college try. She just looks lazy with her one easiest twerk move in the book.
…That’s what’s so offensive, when you’ve been doing it for so many years and then someone who just jumped off the porch tries to do it.
I’ve only been twerking for 2 1/2 years but yes, Big Freedia, I feel you.
So basically, I’m sick of people calling it twerking. Stop.
